Environment and Flooding

Flood Wessex information – Feb 2026.

Reporting Flooding

Environment Agency Incident Hotline 0800 80 70 60

We understand it is a difficult time when people are affected by flooding however, we would encourage those whose homes or businesses have been affected to report property flooding as close to the event as possible: https://www.gov.uk/report-flood-cause

The evidence from flood reporting is crucial in planning effective maintenance and justifying business cases for potential long-term solutions.

Once affected residents are able, we ask that they please submit a full report to floodreport.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk/. This tool is available for residents across Wessex (the service is hosted by Dorset Council but is available for other local authority areas). The information provided is then shared with the risk management authorities to ensure it goes to the correct organisation depending on the source and impact of flooding. If the portal opens on the wrong FORT region, don’t worry, you will be redirected when you identify a property affected.

Businesses

Many businesses have also been affected by flooding, with impacts not only on property but on livelihoods and the wider community. Flood Mary has produced a Business Flood Handbook, and The Flood Hub also has resources about business resilience and recovery.

Please direct any enquiries to the local customers and engagement team wessexenquiries@environment-agency.gov.uk. For enquiries related to Flood Warnings, preparedness, and resilience, you can contact the Flood Resilience team at floodwessex@environment-agency.gov.uk.

Flood Management

Great Bedwyn has a historical problem with flooding in different areas of the village, mainly caused by surface water run off. On the weekend of 7/8th July 2012 a dozen homes and gardens in many areas of Great Bedwyn were flooded. As a result residents reformed the Flood Group in 2012. Great Bedwyn has suffered ongoing incidents since then.

You can view the detailed Atkins report here.

The Flood Group produced a comprehensive list of actions: Action Plan and The Flood Plan.

Many other documents relating to flooding it the village are held in an online archive.

In January 2015 Great Bedwyn was allocated funding to carry out significant engineering works to minimise the risk of future flooding.

In 2023 the Parish Council assumed responsibility for flood management and approved an updated flood plan. Regular preventative work is allocated to the Parish Council handyman. A map of the flood risk areas is below.

Our 2024 Flood report on the flood risk to the Brook St area can be viewed via this link. Brook St Flood survey
